The Battle of Gonzales took place on October 2, 1835 in the town of Gonzales. The battle was between a detachmnet of the Mexican army and the Texian settlers. While it was only a minor skirmish, it is considered to be the start of the Texas Revolution and did much to put the town and settlers of Gonzales into the spotlight of the war and Texas history.

The flag of Gonzales was created by two women, Cynthia Burns and Evaline DeWitt, as a warning to the Mexican forces. These forces were coming to Gonzales to repossess their lone cannon given to them by Mexico to fend off Indians. The Texians gave the Mexicans a surprise attack on the morning of October 2, 1835. The Mexican quickly qithdrew leaving behind their supplies and Gonzales kept its cannon which became a great asset to the Texian army.
